February 2025 Recap of Digital Assets Industry

Despite the pro-crypto regulatory backdrop in the U.S., Bitcoin and alt coins continued to fall in February, primarily due to uncertainty from President Trump's trade war. Furthermore, Bybit exchange was hacked for $1.5 billion in ETH, adding to the market dump.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) abruptly dropped lawsuits against Binance, Coinbase, Uniswap, Robinhood, and other digital assets companies.

Institutions are increasing exposure to digital assets, with BlackRock and MicroStrategy being two of the leaders. Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala sovereign wealth fund took a $436 million stake in BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF.

Memecoin trading, primarily on Solana, collapsed significantly, due to continued insider trading and fraud.

Ethereum is improving its blockchain and enhancing the environment for its Layer 2 (L2) blockchains. As demand shifts to L2s and competing blockchains like Solana, Ethereum’s gas prices have fallen drastically and its revenue is down substantially over the past year. Furthermore, Ethereum is unable to handle high transaction volumes efficiently, forcing more and more major projects to launch their own L2 blockchains; These include Uniswap, which launched Unichain, and Ondo, which launched Ondo Chain.
